2003 Conference:
  • "Humor in Medical School — From Classroom to Bedside"

      The Clown Docs program at St. Louis Childrens Hospital has provided a unique opportunity to expose medical students at Washington University School of Medicine to the benefits of humor. This class will demonstrate the Clown Docs approach for using humor in the hospital and discuss options for medical students to learn about humor.


Bio:
    Dana Abendschein, PhD, is a professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he does vascular research and teaches several classes — including the first credit course on humor therapy offered at any medical school in the country. Dana also co-ordinates a ministry for prisoners called Story Link Program in which inmates read story books on tapes that are sent to their children to strengthen family ties.
    He is also a Clown Doc known as Professor Dude.
     
    Jane Abendschein started the Clown Docs program at St. Louis Childrens Hospital in 1999. She is the director for the program that supplies clowns in the clinics and at the bedside three days each week. Her Clown Doc name is Dr. Tickles.
    Jane also co-ordinates a ministry for prisoners called Story Link Program in which inmates read story books on tapes that are sent to their children to strengthen family ties.
